A bountiful blessing at St Andrew’s School for Girls

In late May, St Andrew’s School for Girls in Bedfordview in Johannesburg, Gauteng, celebrated its annual Harvest Festival and Africa Day.

This is an occasion on which the whole school gathers in an act of thanksgiving. Students and staff acknowledge that the earth is for all who live on it and that all its gifts are given to us as a blessing. Says Daniella Rossouw, the school’s marketing and public relations officer:

“We take this opportunity to bring thanksgiving offerings of food: perishables like oranges, potatoes, pumpkin and squash, and non-perishables like rice, tins and packets of food. This collection is donated to Meals on Wheels, which runs a number of feeding schemes in aftercare programmes for school-aged children and for feeding elderly and infirm people at home.

“Our girls enjoy dressing up in their traditional clothes or outfits that are of significance to their heritage.”
