#UpForSchool is an international campaign that launched in 2013 and is now a movement of hundreds of thousands of people from more than 250 civil society, teacher, faith-based, youth and business international and non-governmental organisations. #UpForSchool has 500 global youth ambassadors campaigning in 85 countries across the globe to accelerate learning opportunities for children everywhere.
Teams from 45 countries – including Costa Rica, Argentina, Cyprus, Sweden and Ireland – came together in the south of France in June to compete in the 2015 Cannes Young Lions Cyber Competition. During this annual competition, teams must provide a solution to a challenge using the power of social media.
This year, the challenge was to create a new social media campaign to get at least five million people to sign the #UpForSchool petition (see: http://www.aworldatschool.org/ upforschool.) The teams had just 24 hours to complete the task, working across Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Snapchat and other applications.
The gold award went to Switzerland, silver to Lithuania and bronze to Brazil. The #UpForSchool petition was launched to take advantage of the power of digital mobilisation to create a global movement of people demanding action to ensure education for every child. One of the biggest in history, the petition was handed to world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015.
