Cannons Creek Independent School creates new centre

Construction of a new Cannons Creek Independent School primary school building, designed by internationally renowned Cape Townbased architects VDMM, commenced in May 2011, and the completed building was handed over to Cannons Creek in January 2012. The lead architect, Macio Miszewski, is the uncle of the 2012 Cannons Creek Dux, Natasha Miszewski.

On Friday 10 February 2012, special guests attended the opening ceremony in Nursery Way, Pinelands, Cape Town. They gathered on the lawns outside the new school building to hear the school’s marimba band and primary school choir lead them in a rousing version of the school song, with music composed by and words written by two of the school’s teachers during 2011. The founding principal, Carol Booth, who is also the principal of the primary school, addressed the gathering with a vote of thanks and a brief overview of the history of the school, which made a modest start in 1997. Today, in the primary school alone, there are 181 pupils from Grade RR-7 and 20 staff members.

Dr Jane Hofmeyr, executive director of the Independent Schools Association of South Africa (ISASA), declared the new building officially open and spoke about the successful development of the school, as well as the importance of independent education. She concluded her speech by saying: “Cannons Creek must exist not only to serve the interests of today’s children but also their children’s children, so that it survives and thrives in the future.”

The morning ended with the pupils, parents, staff and guests celebrating the occasion with a special tea.
