The National All Girls’ Aquatics – or Top Ten Gala, as it has come to be known – took place in Pretoria this year, hosted by Pretoria Girls’ High School at the Hillcrest Pool.

The Durban Girls’ College (DGC) swimming team, captained by Jade Goosen, won this gala for the third consecutive year, beating second-placed Eunice High School by 56 points.

In the individual events, DGC was well placed, with Charlise Oberholzer being placed second in the junior individual medley and Emma Kinghorn coming third in the senior individual medley. Sacha-Lee Nordengen and Nikita Bauristhene both swam to first place in each of the senior and junior 200 m freestyle events.

In the team events, DGC started off well by winning the 6 x 50 m butterfly ladder by 25 m, and the 6 x 50 m freestyle ladder, also by a good margin. However, the gala was a close tussle between DGC and Eunice, until the DGC team forged ahead. “The girls swam their hearts out and they brought it home”, says Goosen.

DGC was in the top three in all of the races, with the U16 team winning gold in every event. This team comprised Nadia Esterhuizen, Tyla Goosen, Sacha-Lee Nordengen, Dawn Schutte and Courtney Perrett.
