Kingsmead turns 80

| March 14, 2014 | 0 Comments

On 12 October last year, the Kingsmead College community undertook a commemorative walk to Zoo Lake in Parkview, Johannesburg, to celebrate the school’s 80-year history. Balloons, soft drinks, cappuccinos and upbeat music set the scene for a happy day.

The walkers each received a special copy of The Star newspaper with a commemorative four-page ‘wraparound’ about Kingsmead College, which is located in Melrose. The sound of marimbas, the unveiling of a Kingsmead rose called ‘Free and Loyal’ — the school’s motto — and the release of white doves left few dry eyes.

The students enjoyed an ‘Amazing Race’, an egg and spoon contest and other carnival games, and then families gathered under a Bedouin tent and enjoyed coconut juice and paella. After the excursion, alumni gathered in the school’s Foundation Court to celebrate various reunions.
