Less than 1 000 days left

There are now fewer than 1 000 days left for the world to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – targets set forth at the United Nations in 2000 to end scourges like poverty, hunger and lack of access to basic, quality primary education.

Across Africa, Millennium Villages have been set up to accelerate multisectoral development. The villages are funded by Millennium Promise (MP), the leading international non-profit organisation established by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

One of MP’s key programmes is Connect To Learn (CTL), focused on providing girl students with computers and internet access. With its lead technology partner, mobile phone multinational Ericsson, CTL has connected more than 33 schools and 35 000 students and teachers in Millennium Villages in Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Uganda, Tanzania and Ghana. The organisation has also made 745 multiyear secondary school scholarships available for girls to attend the schools it enables with broadband connectivity. In late June 2014, Ericsson won the telecoms.com 2014 award for its work with CTL.
