Making the grade: Mokopane English Combined School joins ISASA

| November 13, 2012 | 48 Comments

The recent textbook saga that unfolded in Limpopo should not distract educationists from a pertinent and enduring reality: there are high-functioning schools in the province.

One of these – the Mokopane English Combined School (MECS) in Mokopane – is not only a brand new member of ISASA but, says principal Adriaan Lubbe, is really in its infancy. “Our school was founded in 2008 by some members of the community. The initial idea was to start a primary school for the English-speaking families in the area.”

Such is the need for quality education in the more far-flung parts of South Africa that, at the end of 2009, the MECS school governing body decided to move ahead with plans to institute a high school. Today, 30 MECS teachers deliver the national curriculum to nearly 400 students. “We are now a dual medium school from Grade R to Grade 12. We offer the following subjects in Grade 12: English home language, Afrikaans first additional language, life orientation, mathematics, mathematics literacy, biology, accounting, physical science and geography. From 2013, we will be introducing business studies in Grade 10.”

Growing relationships to grow a school

Such rapid growth could not have happened without the support of Mogalakwena Platinum Mine, where Lubbe formerly headed up an adult basic education and training (ABET) centre. He adds: “They undertook to take part in this project and I really cannot even put into words how much assistance and guidance they have made available. Without their input, I am sure we would not have achieved our goals as quickly and successfully as we did.”

The mine’s support has enabled MECS to make rapid infrastructural improvements. Lubbe details: “ We have just completed a new wing consisting of eight classrooms as well as a sport facility. We also plan to build two more indoor sport courts.”

The new resources have transformed MECS into a beacon of hope in Akasia, a mostly Indian community bordering several black townships. “ We strive to build positive relationships with the many neighbouring public schools that support us without any reservation. Their greatest problems include stationer y and staff shortages, and overcrowded facilities.”

Sustainability and survival

Geographical location means that MECS is a multifaith, multiracial school. “We tolerate and respect religion and race,” says L ubbe firmly. “We also strive for a maximum of 25 students per class, aiming rather for quality than quantity. This enables us to monitor each student’s progress proper ly and to improve both our top and bottom achiev ers’ results.” S easoned educationists agree that the principal challenge for a fast-growing new school is sustainability.

This has meant a “tremendous number of meetings and paperwork to ensure that we qualified for and receive our subsidy from government”, says Lubbe. Recruiting and retaining quality high school teachers is another ongoing struggle, as is compiling a timetable that accommodates MECS’s model, where some educators teach both primary and high school students.

Focusing on efficiency

For assistance in these struggles, Lubbe turned to ISASA. Representatives visited MECS “to see whether we were worthy of being a member”, he remembers. “After a comprehensive evaluation, we were fortunate to be admitted as a member school, and were immediately welcomed by many people who offered to guide us and to give advice where needed. Thanks to ISASA’s various policies and guidelines, our administrative department functions like clockwork.”

The hard work continues

Lubbe isn’t a man with time to spare. He’s got a fledgling school to grow. His parting remarks reveal his characteristic honesty. “Independence means working ver y hard and continuously comparing your standards with those of other schools to ensure that you are as good as you claim to be. I am very proud of the positive feedback concerning the quality of teaching and learning at MECS that we get from members of our community.

“Excellence is our priority.”
