The Nelson Mandela Foundation was abuzz with little people on 17 July when a group of pupils from SAHETI School visited to share in the joy of Madiba’s 93rd birthday. Joining an audience of diplomats, government ministers and officials, SAHETI Grade R pupils proudly presented a card (decorated by pupils) and a cake (baked by past pupil and award winning caterer, Vicky Crease) to Madiba’s grandson, Ndaba Mandela.

Thereafter, there was a symbolic handover of 220 copies of the children’s version of Nelson Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom as gifts for every Grade 3 and Grade 4 pupil from Bertrams Junior School. The school is supported by the Foundation and shares a birthday with Nelson Mandela. This initiative was supported by SAHETI’s Pre-Primary and Playschool parents, facilitated by past pupil Katy Katopodis, Eye Witness News Editor-in-chief, and supported by LeadSA.

The dignitaries present spoke of Madiba’s commitment to children and education, with Katy Katopodis quoting him: “Education is the most powerful tool that you can use to change the world.” A programme highlight was entertainment provided by a group of Grade 7 SAHETI pupils, who performed a Zulu praise song, Siphum e’SAHETI (‘We are from SAHETI’), and a poem, Halala Mnumzane Madiba (‘Congratulations Mr. Madiba’), written by Sithembile Dubazana and Cleopatra Magewushe, two SAHETI teachers.
