The unveiling of a replica of Raphael’s The School of Athens took place at SAHETI School in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, recently. The artwork was painted by SAHETI’s head of art and director of culturals, Maretha Senekal, who was commissioned to undertake this project as a tribute from past pupils and friends to Anastasia Krystallidis (past executive head) for 39 years of dedicated service to SAHETI School. Krystallidis retired at the end of 2013.

Raphael’s original famous fresco was painted between 1509 and 1511, and is housed in the Room of the Segnatura in the Pontifical Palaces of the Vatican in Rome, Italy. The greatest mathematicians, philosophers and scientists of classical and Renaissance times are depicted sharing their ideas and learning together, although they lived at different times.

Senekal’s replica is oil on canvas measuring 210 cm x 350 cm, and took over 360 hours to complete.
