A changing of the guard at Cannons Creek Independent School

In 2017, Carol Booth retired as founding principal of Cannons Creek Independent School in Cape Town in the Western Cape. Hazelmay Duncan, chairperson of the Cannons Creek Trust, paid tribute to “Mrs B”, as she is affectionately known, saying: “She always made her classroom ‘special’ — a place where the children were comfortable and stimulated and proud to say they belonged. ‘Hands-on’ activities and lateral thinking are an integral part of her lessons.”

Duncan adds: “From humble beginnings in 1997, Booth led the school family to the current position of having our own property, with custom-built facilities. The staff complement has grown to 60 and there are now 400 pupils, from Grade RR to Gr 12.

“She is a woman of vision, dedication and determination. The last 20 years have been a time of growth and learning for her. “We salute her for her passion for teaching, and her drive and courage in achieving all that she has done, giving us the opportunity to make the journey with her.”

The Carol Booth Centre, named in Booth’s honour, opened on 20 October 2017. It houses the primary school’s library, art room, computer laboratory and two offices.

Although Booth retired as principal of Cannons Creek Independent School, she will remain on the staff for another year or two to teach Grade 5, her first love. Taking over the helm is Tracy Wahl, who has dedicated her working life to education.

She joined the staff of Cannons Creek in 2014 as deputy principal and Grade 6 class teacher, and says that she feels that the four-year “learnership” under Booth was invaluable.

Wahl is a keen sportswoman and a qualified swimming, athletics and netball coach. She has been involved in these disciplines at all the schools where she has taught, and established netball as a sports code at Cannons Creek.

Wahl’s focus for this year is moving staff and students away from a “fixed” mindset towards a “growth” mindset to help each child develop to their optimal ability.

Wahl says that she feels privileged to have been chosen to take over the mantle as Booth’s successor.

In 2017, Cannons Creek also celebrated its 20th birthday.
