Chatterbox Preschool and After Care

| June 28, 2017 | 0 Comments

Do parents know what they are looking for in a preschool?

Have they thought carefully about what a preschool has to offer? Do they have the opportunity to actively be part of their child’s preschool learning experience? A good preschool forms the foundation for the rest of a child’s schooling career. Chatterbox is a privately owned preschool and after-care facility that caters for children from ages one to five years. The school is located in the picturesque holiday town of Shelly Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) South Coast.

Originally established in 1989, Chatterbox was purchased by principal Natalie Barclay in 2008.

An active learning programme

Barclay has a passion for preschool education. She believes that children should not go to preschool just for day care. Children should be occupied with learning, growing and developing social skills. Every skill they will need in every aspect of their daily lives needs to be covered. This is why Chatterbox provides activities such as the Gymbo Kids physical education programme,1 music and drama, all of which are included in their school fees. Computer training and Miki maths2 are also part of the curriculum. Talks given by representatives from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI)3 and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA)4 help to enhance the children’s community awareness.

Safety first

Chatterbox has a lending library and promotes a “Read to Succeed” philosophy among the children. The school also follows a Christian ethos through its youth ministry. Chatterbox boasts a safe playground that is constantly monitored by CCTV cameras, and employs its own occupational health and safety officer who ensures the ongoing safety of the children. The cameras are also mounted in each classroom. The school has a formal child abuse prevention policy, which we believe is a first for the KZN South Coast. A seven-page document outlining the policy is circulated to all parents on a regular basis.

Everyone welcome

The language of learning is not just English. Chatterbox is a multicultural preschool, and teachers are fluent in English, isiZulu and Afrikaans. They are always encouraged to further their skills by completing first aid, firefighting, computer and even self-defence courses. We also offer our little students clay art, swimming, play ball and ballet.

The school has an open-door policy. Parents are encouraged to visit classes and activities and be part of the school community and learning experience to monitor the progress of their children, who learn under the guidance of the school’s qualified team of experienced teachers and assistants. This team strives to teach each child with unrivalled care and attention.

Joining ISASA a great motivator

Joining ISASA has pushed Chatterbox to a level where the school management team wants to go further and improve every aspect of the school. Staff who were teaching assistants and even cleaners are now striving to improve themselves by studying for early childhood development courses. For them, the school is not just an occupation, it is a way of life, and they are all thoroughly committed to their respective tasks. The school works closely with Creston College, which is also a registered ISASA member. Phil Hawke, principal at Creston College, and David Wilkinson, ISASA regional director, encouraged Chatterbox Preschool to join ISASA, making it the first preschool on the KZN South Coast to become a member of this organisation.

The management and staff of Chatterbox Preschool are extremely proud to be part of ISASA.
