If you are looking for a book that gives you the ‘low-down’ on exactly how to organise any school function, then Event Management and School Improvement is the book to read. The book begins with a look at the definition of events and projects, giving you examples of the differences between the two categories.

Throughout, Noeth makes good use of case studies to support the process and highlights salient points in an elementary style. This would appeal, in particular, to anyone organising their first event for their school. Noeth uses the SMART approach (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound) when setting goals and objectives for an event.

Noeth supplies a cycle diagram to show the process of event management. Brainstorming rules are clearly outlined, and a detailed checklist is provided for the elements of the forthcoming event. He discusses the differences between sponsorships and donations, and specifies the importance of organisations not getting confused between the two. The value of effective teamwork is also highlighted. Keeping a record of event documentation is vital in the case of a comeback or a fallout with the organisations involved. A guideline set on event budgeting is presented in a simple but effective manner, and event marketing and media liaison are covered very briefly.

Noeth makes us aware of the importance of involving the surrounding community for the improvement of the school. In conclusion, he makes use of evaluation and feedback of the event. Although Event Management and School Improvement is fairly elementary, it is a good reminder to those who hold positions requiring organisational skills. This book is an easy read and the information can be easily implemented.
