From SAMSTIP Intern to Doctorate

My name is Mogalatjane Edward Matabane. I grew up in Mashite Village, Limpopo. My journey with the South African Mathematics and Science Teacher Internship Programme (SAMSTIP) began with an internship at St Stithians College, an experience that laid the foundation for my passion for teaching and lifelong learning.

Dr Matabane is a graduate of the SAMSTIP ProgrammeWhen I joined SAMSTIP in 2008, I had a BSc in Pure and Applied Mathematics from the University of Venda for Science and Technology. The SAMSTIP programme generously funded my PGCE studies, which became a pivotal point in my career, shaping not only my teaching but also influencing the trajectory of my life.

As I reflect on my time as a SAMSTIP intern, the transformative nature of the programme is evident. The comprehensive financial and pedagogical support provided me with the tools and resources necessary to excel in my PGCE studies.

The exposure to innovative teaching methodologies and excellent mentorship I received during my internship at St Stithians significantly contributed to my growth as an educator and my readiness for my first teaching job at Lebone II College of Royal Bafokeng in 2010. The encouragement to engage in reflective practice has become an integral part of my teaching philosophy, allowing me to continuously refine and improve my teaching approach.

The exposure to innovative teaching methodologies and excellent mentorship significantly contributed to my growth as an educator.

Teaching my peers in the SAMSTIP programme

During my internship at St Stithians, I was not only a beneficiary but also contributed to the programme’s success. The then-manager, Roz Jaff, offered me the opportunity to facilitate workshops to prepare my peers for their UNISA mathematics examinations by teaching them Discrete Mathematics (MAT 2612) and Linear Algebra II (MAT 2611). I took on that role in 2009 and continue to teach my peers 14 years later. This early teaching role nurtured my enthusiasm for imparting knowledge and played a significant part in my decision to pursue a career in academia.

The programme’s emphasis on holistic teacher development has not only refined my pedagogical skills but also instilled a deep sense of responsibility towards shaping the lives of young individuals. The skills and confidence gained through SAMSTIP empowered me to transition seamlessly into a university lecturer.

Since 2012, I have had the privilege of sharing my passion for mathematics with students at Rhodes University, the University of Pretoria, and Sol Plaatje University and will soon be joining Wits University’s Faculty of Engineering and Build Environment.

From intern to doctoral graduate

SAMSTIP not only ignited my teaching career but also inspired me to pursue advanced studies. The emphasis on continuous professional development instilled in me a commitment to lifelong learning, a principle that guided my academic pursuits. This year, I proudly received my Doctorate in Mathematics Education, a milestone that would have been inconceivable without the solid foundation laid by SAMSTIP.

I am immensely grateful for the opportunities SAMSTIP has provided me and the impact it has had on my professional and academic journey. The programme’s unwavering support has empowered me to make a positive difference in the lives of young people through education. Thank you SAMSTIP for your continued support and the difference you make in the education sector.
