Kingswood College opens state-of-the-art sport centre

| May 22, 2012 | 1 Comment

Kingswood College in Grahamstown recently celebrated the official opening of its magnificent new High Performance Centre. The multimillion rand indoor facility is set to change the face of sport at the school. It was designed and constructed by a team led by Kingswood Business Manager Stephen Gardner and Project Manager Bevin Hare, in consultation with the school’s sports staff and after much research and many visits to indoor sports centres all over South Africa.

Catering for a host of various sporting codes and other activities, the predominant feature at ground level is the massive main playing surface. This area will provide for five indoor cricket nets with full-length run-ups, bowling machines and a video analysis room, as well as full-sized, multipurpose basketball, netball and indoor hockey courts. A fully-equipped and well-ventilated weights room and suites for biokinetics and physiotherapy are also located on this level.

The mezzanine floor boasts a circuit area specially designed to provide athletes with a full-body workout to meet their particular physical needs. A wooden floor is situated at the centre of this wing as a venue for all dance, stretch, aerobics and routine workouts. A cardiovascular/aerobic area equipped with machinery and equipment with a particular emphasis on aerobic training is the other major feature of this level. Also on the mezzanine floor is a climbing wall, the offices of the college head of sport and sports administrator, as well as changing rooms and ablution facilities. This level has a 360° viewing platform, which also serves as a running track.

The centre will be the new permanent home of the Kingswood High Performance Cricket Programme, to be overseen by a professional cricket coach.
