Madonna’s academy fails to get off the ground

Madonna’s plan to build a US$15 million school for girls in Malawi – the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls – has been abandoned.

In a statement released to the press, the singer said that the board of directors of Raising Malawi had been ousted and replaced, amid claims of gross mismanagement and misspending of at least US$3.8 million on golf memberships, cars, architects and design plans. The matter is under investigation by the Global Philanthropy Group.

The singer has said she will still use the organisation to work towards upliftment in Malawi. “There’s a real education crisis in Malawi,” she said.
