As London prepared to host the 2012 summer Olympic Games, SAHETI School in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, was the setting for a special function on 11 June 2012. The event focused on the Olympic Spirit and Ancient Olympia, and was organised by the Lyceum Club of Greek Women under the auspices of the Embassy of Greece in South Africa, in co-operation with SAHETI School, The Federation of Hellenic Communities and the Greek Sporting Club.

Several dignitaries were in attendance, including government officials, ambassadors and consul generals. Guest speaker was Dr Sam Ramsamy (International Olympic Committee executive board member), who delivered an address entitled ‘The torch relay 2012 — from Olympia to London’. Also present was David Cordingley, director of the British Council (South Africa), who gave a briefing on the London 2012 Olympics. SAHETI pupils were honoured to play a part in the proceedings, as flag bearers and in the role of master of ceremonies, while many attended the prestigious function simply to be part of the build-up to this momentous world event. A highlight of the programme was an engaging contribution by a Grade 3 pupil, Savva Hadjiphilippou, who provided his impressions of a visit to ancient Olympia.

Awards were made to pupils from SAHETI and the broader community in recognition of their achievements in Olympic sporting codes at national level. The awards were presented by Ramsamy, as well as two 10 km open water world champions, Spyros Gianniotis (gold medallist) and Marianna Lumberta (bronze medallist), who will both be competing in the upcoming games. The inspirational experience closed with an exchange of commemorative gifts and a moving rendition of the Olympic anthem in Greek by SAHETI School’s choir.
