United Herzlia Schools Staff Day of Inspiration

On 24 July 2017, the Highlands Campus of United Herzlia Schools (UHS) in the Western Cape was buzzing with the sounds of over 400 Herzlia staff, who had come to school for a Day of Inspiration. Together with her extraordinary team of Alon Ashel mothers and assistance from the UHS marketing, information technology (IT) and facilities teams, Cheryl Lazarus, principal of Herzlia Alon Ashel Pre-Primary School, put together a magnificent day.

A talk by Dave Duarte, a member of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Young Global Leaders programme, on “What millennials need” was followed by a marvellous presentation by Philip Krawitz, executive chairperson of the Cape Union Mart Group of Companies and chairperson of the UHS board of trustees, on being a Herzlia alumnus.

The next session involved over 30 alumni: journalists, politicians, thought leaders, academics, community activists, interior designers, photographers, artists, entertainers and entrepreneurs, who had come back to Herzlia to address staff and tell them what they were doing with their lives.

Thereafter, staff could choose to attend one of six presentations dealing with wellness and well-being. There were a number of fascinating talks, including Brett Archibald’s story of how he survived 29 hours at sea after being washed overboard in Indonesia. After lunch, staff could choose from any of the 20 activities on offer including poetry, writing, modern Jewish cooking, pottery and paper mosaics.

Nationally popular comedian Nik Rabinowitz provided the entertainment for the finale. The Herzlia Staff Day of Inspiration was the school’s way of showing its staff that each staff member is important. “We wanted our staff to have fun, put a face to a name and meet their colleagues from other campuses, learn a little and enjoy a lot,” says Lazarus.
