Victory through perseverance

by Mondi Mdletshe
This year will be a sporting year to remember at Nardini Convent school.

Just three days into our school calendar, we received an e-mail from the Vryheid Swimming Club inviting our swimmers to take part in the Interschool Gala that was being held at Pioneer Hoërskool.
Twenty of our best swimmers participated in the gala, which saw Nardini Convent School swim away with 18 medals, Four of our boys, Samuel Nel, Thabiso Mnyandu, Aphiwe Buthelezi and Clevyle Thomas were selected to join the Zululand squad and were sent to Durban’s Kings Park Pool to compete in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Championships.

Whilst all that was taking place, we sent 16 athletes to participate in the Vryheid District meeting, where eight of our athletes made it into the second round. The number then dropped to four athletes, who made the Vryheid Bhekezulu squad and participated in and important meeting held in Ulundi. The competition was intense. Two of our boys made the Zululand team which travelled to Durban to compete in the KZN athletics championships. Tusani Zondo came back with a silver medal after running the 100m and a bronze medal for the 200m race. Siyabulela Maseko also ran very well. Tusani Zondo made the KZN athletics team and travelled to Germiston to pursue his South African colours. When the results came in, he was declared one of the fastest runners in the under-13 boys group in the country.

Our success has not ended there in 2019. Three of our boys made the Northern KZN rugby team and played some important matches in Pietermaritzburg. Four Nardini hockey players were included in the Zululand team, and also travelled down to Pietermaritzburg for Inlands Hockey trials.
With hard work and dedication, the boys and girls of Nardini Convent School showed that they can perform at any level.
